You can test whether a server will accept mail for a user using telnet. From the prompt enter:

  >>> telnet mail.example.com 25
  <<< Trying 1.2.3.4...
  <<< Connected to mail.example.com.
  <<< Escape character is '^]'.
  <<< 220 mail.example.com ESMTP Mail host
  >>> helo me
  <<< 250 colo14.roaringpenguin.com Hello tunnel.roaringpenguin.com [64.26.171.99], pleased to meet you
  >>> mail from:<>
  <<< 250 2.1.0 <>... Sender ok
  >>> rcpt to:<user@example.com>
  <<< 250 2.1.0 <>... Recipient ok

Where:

  • >>> is what you type
  • <<< is the computer response
  • mail.example.com is the hostname or IP address of the mail server
  • user@example.com is a valid email address for the domain
