7 February 2006 – Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - ISWest, a California-based broadband internet service provider has revamped its e-mail filtering services by selecting Roaring Penguin Software's CanIt-PRO anti-spam solution. Customers are now able to choose from three levels of anti-spam scanning in order to better customize their individual spam filters.

“With our previous home-grown spam solution, we were trying to paint a Picasso with a paint roller,” explains Clayton Weise, ISWest's Technical Support Manager. “The solution worked, but it was a one-size-fits-all spam filter. If a customer felt that their mail was being filtered too aggressively – or not aggressively enough – we couldn't make changes without affecting every other customer. That's all changed, though, since installing CanIt-PRO.”

With CanIt-PRO, ISWest has been able to offer users a wide choice of anti-spam options by creating basic, intermediate and advanced filtering packages for customers to choose from. Furthermore, messages held in spam quarantines no longer count against a customer's usage quota. “CanIt has been in place for just over a month and we've already seen our help desk calls from customers decrease.” Weise notes.

CanIt-PRO has also allowed ISWest to reduce the amount of spam reaching its mail servers and tying up valuable bandwidth. Scott Youngs, Director of Operations explains that “With our previous solution, we had to accept all mail and then scan it for spam and virus messages. With CanIt, we can now drop all of the spam before it hits our mail servers ensuring that we are only letting clean e-mail into our systems.”

Youngs explained that ISWest examined five commercial anti-spam solutions before choosing CanIt-PRO. “In acquiring multiple ISPs over the years, we've had to meld various architectures for passing mail and authenticating users. CanIt-PRO proved to be the best at integrating into a complex environment like ours.” Youngs also said that ISWest considered outsourcing spam filtering through a hosted anti-spam service vendor, but quickly rejected the idea. “We weren't comfortable relying on a third party for spam scanning,” said Youngs. “We have guaranteed levels of service we need to provide to our customers and we didn't want something as important as spam filtering to be outside our control.”
